Villa Adriana

Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, the Villa was built between 118 and 138 A.D. by the Emperor Hadrian in a lush and verdant oasis near Tivoli, the ancient Tibur.

The Villa covered an area of at least 296 acres and included residential buildings, thermal baths, nymphaea, pavilions and gardens. The individual buildings were not only linked together by paths on the surface but also by an underground network of routes for pedestrians and carts used by menials engaged in service providing activities. The architectural and sculptural decorations of the villa were extraordinarily lavish and have been the subject of feverish and systematic research from as far back as Renaissance times.

Almost all the major museums and collections in Rome, the rest of Italy and even Europe exhibit artefacts from Villa Adriana. At the present time, around 99 acres are open to visitors

The following service facilities are available within the Archaeological Site: toilet facilities, drinking water fountains, a small refreshment facility, signs describing the individual monuments.

The archaeological site is mainly outdoors, so comfortable clothing suited to the season is recommended.

Clothing should be respectful both of the place and other people. Unless specific authorization is granted by the Management, period costumes/clothing cannot be worn when visiting the archaeological site. Since the archaeological site is mainly outdoors, visitors must take all the necessary precautions in the event of extreme weather conditions. We recommend consulting the website of the Civil Defence service for further information (www.protezionecivile.gov.it). Knowing about such events is the first step towards learning how to deal with them correctly and defending oneself from danger.

The Villae are part of an inestimable architectural, archaeological, historical and naturalistic heritage. To preserve their beauty and protect them from damage they must be treated with care. We need everyone’s cooperation if this precious and fragile legacy is to maintain its splendour and continue to reveal its age-old history. The Villae comprise diverse, multiform sites, but are the expression of one and the same cultural heredity and unitary management principles. This is why we have drawn up a single set of general regulations for conscious and respectful use of the venues that can be easily adapted on the basis of the specific characteristics of each one of us.
